Just when I think I can sit back and relax with JH Williams art, he adds a new twist to it. I already love his art, so I’m always concerned with any new additions. You cannot improve on what is already outstanding, so any change must be bad. But he adds a new twist, a new visual trick, something I haven’t seen before. He is always a surprise.
His new trick is the x-ray view. By showing us the fight scene from two perspectives. One is the normal camera view, but parts of it are shown in x-ray. It adds to the impact of the contacts. We get to see wrist bones break, and ribs crack. What might have been a typical fights scene gets a new visual spin.
His usual (awesome) style is still there. The leather is sexy and the red hair flows like water. But I think he has actually improved the ghost. The image of the three women’s faces all merged together. With one of them dripping water down into the boy’s mouth. Something so horrific, yet so beautiful at the same time.
And he doesn’t spare the details. The bar scene is complete. It is not just a comic book bar. It is a full staging of the bar. You seen the dials on the amps for the instruments on the stage. You nose ring on one of the background people. He even drew the buckle on the coat belt. Most artist would never spend the time on those details.
One of his new tricks is the fight scene. It was a visual feast before the re-enactment. Looking at all the cool things there. But the mental reenactment was crazy cool. How added some cool highlight circles to help the reader. I don’t think it was needed, but I appreciate the storytelling.
