Nightwing

Nightwing is no longer Batman and is back as Nightwing.  I think it is better for it.  While we all liked seeing little Robin all gown up, I think the character works better as Nighting and not a substitute Batman.  We already have a Batman, we don’t need another.

That is why I was glad they emphasized the unique qualities that make Dick who he is.  I liked the return home to the Circus.  It introduces a character everyone knows, but also acts as a refresher.

I like that he is a slob that leaves his clothes laying around, and eats food right out of the box.  Maybe they will bring back the old womanizing Dick from the past, and make him whole.

I’m not sure what I think about the villain.  I like how he after Dick and not Nightwing, but he sure is dumb. He chases Dick and then Nightwing shows up.  And he doesn’t associate the two together?  He obviously knows Dick is an acrobat, but doesn’t connect the two?

The art is solid.  He does try had on the layouts.  It likes to put in angled panels.  Sometimes it works and adds a kinetic energy, and other times it make reading a diagonal panel that spans a page-bend hard to understand.

I, on the other hand, really miss Dick Grayson as Batman, but I can’t complain since it worked for a couple of years and we all knew Bruce would be back eventually. I’m glad that this new series doesn’t ignore the past continuity of Dick being Batman for a bit, even if they do gloss over the details.

Bringing Nightwing back to his circus roots has been done before, but it’s done very well here, and it also seems to set up a mystery with a hook about a new villain being after Dick Grayson for something that it doesn’t seem likely he actually did. I’m always happy to see some murder-mystery elements in the bat-books. The new costume is cool – it looks a lot like the old ones except it’s red now (is red some kind of theme for the new 52?).
