Hawk & Dove #2

Hawk and Dove #2

So we find out who the villan of the first issue is.  I like the whole avatar concept, but I’m not sure where it is going.  Do only the birds have their own avatar?  or does each animal have an avatar?  And is there only a certain number of avatars?  One of the villans uses some mystic ritual to take Osprey’s powers, but then becomes the Swan.  So does that mean that the Swan didn’t have an avatar already?  or is there now two for the Swan (and none for the Osprey)?  And isn’t the avatar selected have personality traits similar to the animal?  I men Hawk is aggressive and Dove is peaceful.  I don’t think this chick is very Swan like.  But what do I know about avatars?

But I do know Hawks costume is very large.  The character is drawn about 6’8″, but he has these gigantic cloth wings on his shoulders.  They stick up a couple of feet, and stick out a couple of feet on each side too.  How does he fit through doors?  Are they flexible? and if they are flexible, how do they stay up?  And what exactly are they attached to.  There are some panels in the end where it shows them just hovering over him.  Do they fly?

I guess the story is just a set up for next issue.  We find out about Hawk’s relationship with Ren.  And we learn more about what a jerk Hawk is.  Not quite the ‘lets go beat up strangers for no reason’ from last issue, but still ‘I don’t care about my Dad’s big award’ jerk is still a jerk.

The art is good, although some of the angels he is using seem to come right out of the John Byrne playbook.  The page with the half-masked Dove seems lifted directly from an old 80s Fantastic Four.  But there are actually more eyeballs drawn in this issue than I’ve seen a in a while, and few feet drawn too.  Rob does draw his women well, and Dove in an evening dress looks better than in that costume.
