Either I’m an idiot, or this writing is horribly impenetrable. I’m not ruling out #1, but I think #2 is likely. I think he attempting a sense of pulp wonder. That crazy sense that anything can happen. That crazy, mind-blowing things can happen at any time. That the audience will be so dazzled by the creativity that will just go along with ride and not attempt to understand what is going on. A whirwind of new ideas. That is what I think he is going for, but it just confuses and angers me.
They introduce Adam in the first couple of pages, which goes from the majestic bigbang to asking for a pint of bear in 2 seconds. I guess this juxtaposition is supposed to be funny, but it is just annoying.
Jenny wants to lead the team. And says so twice in this issue. Both during extreme crisis. Maybe they are so used to life-or-death situations that they can concentrate on mundane things like power struggles, but we the audience are not so used them, and it just comes across as petty and irresponsible.
The scene shifts to Moscow where we see Midnighter and Appollo talking about a partnership. I can’t tell how this fits with previous stories. From the dialogue it seems disjointed. Midnighter says that he has been training Apollo for over a year, but then he says he wants them to work together? Haven’t they been working together?
Then suddenly Manhunter pops up and starts talking. No effort was made by the writer to let the audience in on what is going on. If you didn’t know Manhunter you would wonder who he was? and where he came from?
And the worst dialogue I’ve seen in a while: “unless you desire further futile combat. And gentelmen..that would be acting like those you affect not to be. Would it not?” What does that mean? Is Manhunter Shakespearean?
I know it is petty, but even the abbreviations are wrong: ‘Cos I think. Should be : ’cause I think. It alleviates because not becos.
So many things unanswered. Dark Matter DNA? Birthed a Data miner? Being a good swordsman makes you the ‘prince of lies’?! what does being the best pistolier make you? King of lies?
They don’t even explain who Jack is. And why he can sense cities.
D- It would be lower except I liked how the JLA attacked the Fox.
