When Elizabeth Hargrave went birding in Central America, she was amazed at the quantity and diversity of hummingbirds she encountered (they make up about one tenth of all bird species in this region). Because they all have similar food, size, and habitat qualities, she wanted to find a new way to express their charms in Wingspan. So for the new Wingspan Americas Expansion, she developed the Garden Board, where hummingbirds spend their time between visits to a new overlay on players’ habitat boards. Each time you activate a habitat row from right to left, the last action of your turn will be a hummingbird action, either attracting a hummingbird from the garden to your overlay, or returning a hummingbird to the garden, both of which provide benefits. I find the feeling of the hummingbirds flitting around the table to be very true to life, and I love how Elizabeth brought these birds to the game.
